In 2005, Smith LaRock Architecture began implementing and adopting Building Information Modeling (BIM), a 3D method and software solution (REVIT) to using computer-aided design and drafting (CAD/D) in the development of our projects. After only a couple projects, we saw the value of the new workflow implemented so we committed to doing 100% of our work in REVIT. We transitioned away from AutoCAD to doing our design and documentation exclusively in the Autodesk Revit Architecture BIM environment, and we never looked back!
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has changed the way we design. We now digitally construct and design the project in the computer, enabling both our Clients and us to see various aspects of the project prior to construction. This methodology forces designers to consider assemblies, materials, construction sequencing, product selection, and constructability much earlier in the design process. The capability to communicate more information within a virtual model became a large part of SLA’s ability to offer design services to our core clients who are spread out across the continent and even overseas. We trademarked our 3D DistanceDesignTM process and it has become synonymous with the way we communicate with our clients.
As our Clients know, there is risk in developing projects, and the cost of changes in a project increase by an order of magnitude as the design advances from design into the construction phase. By designing in 3D BIM through our DistanceDesign methodology, we communicate our design intent far earlier, clearer, and more efficiently than ever before. Our team stays current on the latest trends in 3D building documentation. Our staff have trained and tested to become Autodesk Revit Architecture Certified Professionals, and we remain up-to-date on the latest versions of our selected 3D platforms: Autodesk Revit and Trimble SketchUp.

We utilize Revit Architecture and Trimble SketchUp from the start. Our kickoff design meetings with the client are typically executed in SketchUp for speed. Very quickly, we can show programmatic designs and architectural features in 3D to help communicate the design concept and spatial relationships. Next, we move into our Schematic Design phase where we design and construct the 3D computer model in Revit Architecture. We create assemblies that meet the site’s thermal and durability requirements, assign preliminary materials and finishes, import manufactured products, and establish the building systems – all in 3D! We can export walkthrough animations and create life-like renderings when requested to assist our clients in making better decisions throughout design.
Using Revit Architecture, Revit Structural, and Revit MEP, we can combine the 3D models prepared by each design discipline and coordinate the interferences and material collisions that would cause issues during construction. By addressing these conflicts earlier in the project we can help save our clients money while simplifying the construction phase.
By seamlessly integrating the work of our consulting engineers directly into our 3D models, Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil may be better visualized and coordinated throughout the design process. Our BIM approach to design gives us real-time access to design development, design changes, and multi-disciplinary coordination as we work, helping to ensure that our consultants designs remain synchronized with the architectural model.
Our models are prepared using many parametric elements which allow adjustment of individual parameters of a component that we specify, permitting consistency and precision across the entire construction document drawing set. Parameters in Revit Families also allow us to make sure the building components are in accordance with the manufactured product while keeping model size in control.
